6 Reasons to Add LinkedIn to Your Online Marketing

Just when I thought I had enough with social networking. Meaning, no more joining new ones, I get lured into niche social networks particularly Groups with large and active members. With over 60 million members geared towards professionals and thousands of Groups, it’s definitely worth exploring LinkedIn. It’s also under the radar compared to Twitter and Facebook. LinkedIn should definitely be a part of your online marketing mix if it’s not already. Here are 6 reasons why I’m loving LinkedIn and particularly fond of the Group feature.

Even if you’re not on LinkedIn, why not consider it as part of your online marketing efforts? For example, there’s something for entrepreneurs, small business owners, large corporations, and job seekers. Let’s say you’re a job seeker, you have the potential to connect with a fortune 500 company, HR managers, and executive recruiters.

Last time I checked, Nike and Coca Cola are LinkedIn. If you’re a small business owner in direct sales, there are hundreds of groups for direct sales, home-based, or network marketing entrepreneurs. It’s a fantastic opportunity to network and reach your target audience. And if you can’t find a group in your market, start one yourself, and invite people to join you.

Although I’m mostly on Twitter and on Facebook sometimes, those sites serve different purposes than LinkedIn. Twitter gets so spammy especially with the repeated tweets about making money or business opportunities. And Facebook, I check in periodically to see what’s new with my friends and family, but I prefer not to engage in business babbles with them. I’m not saying Facebook can’t be used as a business tool but it’s generally more on the friendship side for me. I know there are groups and fan pages with Facebook to tap into but that’s another post for another day.

However with LinkedIn, it has always been about connecting businesses, job seekers, and professionals. The fact that you can’t easily follow someone and have that person follow you back like you could on Twitter is proof that there’s an air of “gate keeping” approach with LinkedIn and I kinda like that. It keeps the spammers on the low radar.

So let’s start with Groups:

1. Groups
There are hundreds of groups in direct sales and network marketing not to mention alumni and businesses in many industries. I did a search for “direct sales” and there were 181 groups. What I like about the LinkedIn Groups that I’m in is that the members are actively engaged in the discussions. There are still too many business opportunity and product promotions but for the most part, I’ve found the groups to be engaging and targeted to the individuals that I want to connect with.

2. News
Share your blog posts under News and select to all the groups you belong to and it gets pinged to multiple groups at the same time.

3. Answers
Although it’s similar to Yahoo Answers however what I like about LinkedIn Answers is that you generally know the identity of the person asking the question and the person providing the answer. You can even ask a question and start a conversation. I also like the weekly update that tells me who in my network has contributed to the answers which tells me how active she/he is.

4. Blog Link & Twitter Feed
The Blog Link feature automatically updates your latest posts to your profile. There’s also a Twitter feed if you want your profile to display your most recent tweets. You can also share your status on LinkedIn to Twitter too.

5. Reading List by Amazon
You might think what’s the big deal about what my contacts are reading but if you’re in direct sales or network marketing, you know the importance of personal and professional development. In fact, one of the very top networkers advises that you should ask someone what type of business or motivational book they’re currently reading. Top leaders in direct sales are big time readers!

As a marketing tool, I’m able to see what my contacts are reading on my home page and I can easily comment to get a conversation started. It takes 2 seconds with a simple comment: “I’m reading the same book right now. What do you like about it so far?”

6. A ton of other LinkedIn features to check out!
There are a lot of other useful features on LinkedIn to look into in addition to the above 5 tips. Here is a very helpful guide on LinkedIn with 20 tips and tricks: http://www.easytweaks.com/2009/11/28/best-linkedin-tips-tricks-and-hacks/
